Vacuum Formed Plastics

Vacuum formed plastics are created by a plastic thermoforming process that involves forming thermoplastic sheets into three-dimensional shapes through the application of heat and pressure. This process is called vacuum forming.

During the vacuum forming process, plastic material is heated until it becomes pliable, and then it is placed over a mold and drawn in by a vacuum until it takes on the desired shape. Vacuum formed plastics have sharp details and fit nicely to specific products.

Vacuum formed plastics are used for various industries, such as the food, cosmetic, medical, electronics, entertainment, household products, toys, athletic equipment, appliance, automotive, office supplies, and clothing industries. Packaging products like blister packs, inserts, trays and clamshells are common examples of vacuum formed plastics.

Vacuum Forming is a low cost alternative to sheet metal or injection molding for producing plastic parts. Shipping Trays, Covers and Enclosures of virtually any shape are good examples of Vacuum Formed products. Some advantages of Vacuum Forming are:

  • Tooling costs are substantially lower then injection molding tooling costs.

  • Vacuum Forming has a greater degree of versatility in the finished product than injection molding.

  • Vacuum Forming has the ability to produce parts in volume with accurate replication of the original part.
